Artist Rights and the Protection of Artwork
Have you had your artwork destroyed or mutilated? Has your work been used without your permission? Altered or exploited? There are laws which protect your art and your rights as an artist.
For example, the Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 (“VARA”) prohibits the destruction and mutilation of certain kinds of artwork without the artist’s consent. It allows an artist whose artwork is destroyed or mutilated to bring a lawsuit in federal court and seek compensation for damages to such artwork. VARA also authorizes an artist to seek an injunction to protect art from being mutilated or destroyed. There are other potential legal protections for artwork as well.
Artists Have Rights.
Our firm helps artists whose rights have been abused and need legal representation. For example, we currently represent a group of twenty-one artists who have had their artwork painted over without their consent.
